Temi Ami-Williams (Eyimofe) stars in The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos, described as a part thriller, part magical realism telling a story about the government’s forced evictions of informal settlements.
A debut from Nigeria’s Agbajowo Collective, the film will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024 Centrepiece program, formerly known as Contemporary World Cinema, alongside 43 film selections from 41 countries.
The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos tells the story of a young mother from a waterfront slum in Lagos who stumbles upon a horde of corrupt blood-money earmarked for a luxury estate to be built where her community stands. She must overcome isolation, temptation and loss to be a unifying force in a community that stands to lose everything.
The Agbajowo Collective is a group of youth from slums and a team of professionals, namely James Tayler, Ogungbamila Temitope, Okechukwu Samuel, Mathew Cerf, Tina Edukpo, Bisola Akinmuyiwa, and A.S. Elijah.
According to a profile published at the Durban Filmmart 2019, “this film is part of a broader ongoing partnership, and is a co-creative endeavour to support the co-producers’ joint efforts to fight forced evictions and land grab negatively impacting urban poor communities in many cities around the globe.”
The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos will also star Debo ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adedayo who is also starring in another film at TIFF 2024 with Discovery selection Freedom Way announced 2 weeks ago.
