Batman Begins

As the first in The Dark Knight Trilogy which was released in 2005, it presents the origin story of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) as Gotham City’s Batman. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a young child, Bruce Wayne goes through years of training, as well as overcoming his childhood fear of bats to become Batman. As Batman, he protects Gotham City from those who wish to destroy it. 

Successfully rebooting Batman’s story, Batman Begins received an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography, cementing Nolan’s place as a skilled director. 

Batman Begins is available to stream on Prime Video. 

The Dark Knight

Continuing Batman’s story, The Dark Knight establishes and battles a new villain; the Joker, who was teased at the end of the previous film. 

The Dark Knight, continuing the success of its first instalment, was highly acclaimed, becoming the highest-grossing film of its year, 2008. Countering initial doubts regarding his casting, Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker earned him widespread acclaim for his captivating performance. 

The Dark Knight is available to stream on Prime Video. 

Inception

Inception follows Dom Cobb, its protagonist played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who has a rare talent of extracting information from people by entering into their dreams. 

Cobb, accused of murdering his wife, is offered a way out by businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe) who hires him to plant an idea in the mind of Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), Saito’s competitor’s son. 

Inception received several award nominations including at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Although it was beaten by other films in many major categories, it still went home with four awards at the Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. 

Inception is available to stream on Showmax. 

The Dark Knight Rises

Four years after The Dark Knight was released, The Dark Knight Rises completes the trilogy. A member from the League of Shadows (assassins working for Ra’s al Ghul who Batman kills in the first movie), Bane (Tom Hardy) who is determined to wreak havoc appears. Selina Kyle or Catwoman played by Anne Hathaway is introduced in this instalment. 

The Dark Knight Rises was generally acclaimed by critics as a fitting conclusion of the trilogy.

Interstellar

Interstellar is set many years in a dystopian future where Earth is now uninhabitable. A former NASA test pilot, Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), is recruited to join the Endurance team who are on a mission to find a new planet for humankind. 

The science fiction movie was released in 2014 and is available to stream on Showmax. 

Dunkirk

Based on the events of the Dunkirk evacuation, which was also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk during World War II, Dunkirk follows the rescue attempt of 400,000 allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and France who were circled by German enemy troops. Dunkirk involves the ‘miracle’ rescue of over 300,000 soldiers from the sea. 

Dunkirk is available to stream on Showmax. 

Oppenheimer 

The 2023 thriller film follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American physicist who helped create nuclear weapons during World War II. 

Oppenheimer, which is now Nolan’s most Oscar-nominated film, received several awards including Best Picture and Nolan’s first Best Director win at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
