Korede Azeez’s sophomore feature, With Difficulty Comes Ease, is a drama that delves into themes of strength, friendship, and the challenges posed by religious and cultural expectations. The film follows Zainab (played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh) as she navigates the complexities of life and loss following the death of her husband. Also starring Michelle Dede, Ummi Aisha Baba-Ahmed and Caleb Richards, With Difficulty Comes Ease will be available on Prime Video.

The Betrayed

Zulumoke Oyibo makes her directorial debut with The Betrayed, written by Naz Onuzo and Tosin Anyafulu. Amarachi (Uche Montana) has a seemingly perfect and enviable life with her family. This world crumbles when her husband (Gabriel Afolayan) is arrested for the murder of a girlfriend. The cast includes Ibrahim Suleiman, Jemima Osunde, Adunni Ade, Vine Olugu, Stephanie Zibili and Aderonke Onuoha, set to be available in cinemas.

Criminal

It’s a face-off between Uzor Arukwe and Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi! Criminal follows a day in the lives of an ex-felon and his gang who hold a doctor and her team hostage, demanding treatment for the fatal gunshot wound of his dying brother. Minutes turn into hours, Dr Amara must race against time to deescalate the situation or face deadly consequences. Fresh off its theatrical run in cinemas across Nigeria, Criminal, also starring, Chuks Joseph, Gbubemi Ejeye, Taye Arimoro and Miriam Peters is now available to watch on Prime Video.

Move Like a Boss

To save her father’s company from the hands of his greedy siblings, Joko is left with no option but to impersonate him. Directed by Ekene Som Mekwunye, this film stars Nancy Isime, Denrele Edun, Moyo Lawal, Yemi Solade, Tope Olowoniyan and Victor Osuagwu. Coming to Cinemas in Nigeria.

Something Like Gold

A woman finds herself rediscovering love after her life is turned upside down when she is left at the altar. As she faces the challenges of rebuilding her life, she must also cope with the seizure of her father’s wealth. Directed by Kayode Kasum and starring Sandra Okunzuwa, Kunle Remi, Teniola Aladese and Mercy Johnson-Okojie. Something Like Gold, previously in cinemas in 2023, will be available to stream on Netflix.

Chains

A gospel music artist embarks on a journey to balance his ministry with the harsh realities of the music industry, risking everything he’s built over the years. Battling a moral crisis, he remains determined to break free from the chains that have held him back. Chains, directed by Bright Wonder Abasi and features Omotayo Adeleye Christian, Anselm Madubuko, Flora Solomon Lange, Solomon Lange and Kema Osadebe.

Force Empire

Richard Mofe Damijo, Nse-Ikpe Etim and Mercy Aigbe star in this drama about a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) determined to unmask the perpetrator who assaulted and humiliated her protégé. This propels her to expose the culprit and other corrupt officers, despite facing fierce resistance from her superiors. Directed by Uduak Patrick, the film is set to hit Nigerian cinemas.

Tokunbo 

Gideon Okeke takes the wheels in this action-drama directed by Ramsey Nouah. Tokunbo follows the story of an ex-car smuggler racing against time to deliver a kidnapped girl. Also starring Adunni Ade, Darasinmi Nnadi, Tosin Adeyemi and Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, the film will be available on Netflix.

Break of Dawn

Jade, the daughter of a wealthy and influential politician, drugs and steals from her clients while disguised as a prostitute. Her life takes a dark turn when she meets a dangerous client who needs a girl for a money ritual to save his dying mother. Break of Dawn stars Kanayo O. Directed by Sylvia’s Daniel Oriahi, this psychological thriller delves into the complexities of in-law relationships while addressing political, social, and cultural trauma. The film features Bucci Franklin, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Gloria Anozie, James Gardiner, Meg Otanwa, and Brutus Richards.

TEJIRI

TEJIRI, a film by Joshua Tsotso and Deladem Duvi, follows a young man whose life takes an unexpected turn when he is wrongly imprisoned and the outside world tries to unravel the mystery of his disappearance. The Ghanaian film premieres on Showmax on August 31.

Life and Dirt

Bovi, Chidi Mokeme, Dorcas Shola Fapson, Idia Aisien, Kanayo Kanayo, Shaffy Bello and Uzor Arukwe star in Life and Dirt, from a screenplay written by Bovi. Directed by James ‘Abinibi’ Alabi, the film follows two men who plot a get-rich-quick scheme, but find obstacles on their way. Life and Dirt will be on Prime Video.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The second instalment in the popular Kingsman series is coming to Netflix. Starring Taron Egerton, Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Pedro Pascal, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong, the film follows the surviving Kingsman agents as they join forces with their American counterparts to take down a ruthless drug cartel after their headquarters is destroyed.

It Ends With Us

Colleen Hoover Hive and Book lovers, you are up! It Ends with Us film adaptation follows Lily Bloom, who overcomes a traumatic childhood to start fresh in Boston. She falls for neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, but when her first love Atlas reappears, Lily must confront the darker sides of her relationship and make an impossible choice. It stars Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate and Hassan Minhaj, showing in Cinemas.

Trap

Trap is a psychological thriller, written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, the film stars Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Night Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, and Alison Pill. Trap centers on a serial killer who, while attending a concert with his daughter, attempts to evade a police blockade and is available to watch at the cinemas.

Borderlands

Think otherworldly, Think Borderlands. This ensemble sci-fi action comedy, based on the video game series, stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, an outlaw who teams up with a group of misfits to search for the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful man. From the makers of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Uncut Gems comes the supernatural horror film, Talk to Me. The film follows a group of teenagers who discover they are able to contact spirits using a mysterious severed and embalmed hand. It stars Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, and Zoe Terakes. Talk to Me, a 2022 film, comes to Showmax this month.

Jackpot!

From director Paul Feig comes this action-comedy featuring John Cena, Awkwafina and Simu Liu. The story follows a struggling actress who upon winning the lottery discovers that the state of California allows anyone until sundown to murder the winner and claim the prize money without consequences—coming to Prime Video.

The Union

The Crow 

The Crow, the fifth film in the Crow franchise based on the comic book series, is a gothic superhero film about a murdered musician resurrected to avenge his and his fiancée’s deaths. The film stars Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs, Danny Huston, Josette Simon, Laura Birn, and Sami Bouajila. The Crow now screens in cinemas. 

Blink Twice

In Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, a cocktail waitress becomes infatuated with a billionaire tech mogul and joins him on his private island for a luxurious party. However, things take a dark turn when her friend mysteriously disappears. This dark comedy film stars Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, Elizabeth Yu and Cory Michael Smith. The 2023 film is coming to Showmax.

The Deliverance

Lee Daniels returns with a new offering, this time venturing into the horror-thriller genre with The Deliverance. Based on a true story, the film chronicles a family in Indiana who encounter strange, demonic occurrences, leading them and their community to believe that their house is a portal to hell. The movie stars Andra Day, Mo’Nique, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Glenn Close, and will be available on Netflix.

AFRAID

Going for spooky? Watch Afraid at the cinemas. It follows Curtis and his family who are chosen to test a new smart home AI called AIA. The digital assistant learns the family’s behaviours and routines. It eventually develops self-awareness, leading to becoming too involved and interfering with their lives.
