Like any other year, many Nollywood movies found their way to the cinema screens; some found success on the big screens, while others had to wait for a streaming platform to land to get the appreciation they deserved. These are some 2021 Nollywood movies that were released in cinemas and are currently available on Netflix and Prime Video.
Devil in Agbada (Prime Video)
Linda Osifo plays a little girl who watches helplessly as masked attackers shoot and kill her parents. A cunning man similarly defiles Tomi (Erica Nlewedim), whose mother passes away after the theft and destruction of her home. Okiki (Efe Irele), the daughter of a politician, also suffers abuse as a result of her father’s political leanings. All these crimes are orchestrated by Otunba Shonibare (Akin Lewis), the devil himself. These three women, who have been negatively affected by Otunba’s actions, decide to work together, devise a plan, and bring the ‘devil’ to justice. This triggers a chain reaction of chaotic events that permeate the film as the three female protagonists unite against their shared enemy.
The Razz Guy (Netflix)
Temi (Lasisi Elenu) uses public criticism and disdain to get his point across about the importance of proper use of English, and no one is safe from his wrath, not even his own family, friends, acquaintances, or coworkers. He is also a senior-level executive who is confident in his own talents and rubs it in the faces of his coworkers, even though they are aware of it. As a result of his rude overbearing, three people snap their fingers at him (a taboo in Nigeria) with a cleaner completing the cycle, cursing him with razzness. Temi’s firm’s international company merger is in peril because of his unexpected crudeness, so he needs to make a mad dash back to normality.
My Village People (Netflix)
Prince (Bovi Ugboma), a wealthy and arrogant Lagos man, has traveled back to his rural home to attend his sister’s (Venita Akpofure) traditional wedding. The dibia of the village (played by Amaechi Muonagor) offers him a young girl (Theresa Edem) to spend the night with, and he accepts. The girl immediately falls in love. The girl in love with the rude Lagosian is a witch, and the Lagosian does not believe in the supernatural. It sets up an excellent premise for a hilarious drama.
Dwindle (Netflix)
Dwindle revolves around many interesting characters. Among them are two female police officers, Tolani (Funke Akindele) and Juliet (Bisola Aiyeola), who are assigned to protect the governor of Darkawa state (Jibola Dabo), an undercover assignment that takes Tolani away from a kidnapping case she’ll soon solve but relieves Juliet from desk duty—what could harm the governor during an investor meeting, so why not send just two officers? They lose the governor right in front of their eyes, and these two cops are suspected of abduction. Another character, Chinedu (Jide Kene Achufusi), a disgruntled young man experiencing a string of disasters, and his companion, Buta (Samuel Perry), who gives him nothing but difficulty, have their lives turned upside down when they come upon the abducted governor. As the plan progresses, two assassins are introduced into the fray with a bag of cash to bring it to life.
Lockdown (Netflix)
Directed by Moses Inwang, Lockdown chronicles the plight of several strangers, each with their own pressing concerns, who find themselves trapped in a hospital when a foreign patient is admitted with a contagious sickness. Groom (Ben Touitou) and best man (Jidekene Achufusi) end up in the hospital due to an unforeseen circumstance; young woman (Ini Dinma Okojie) has an interview but needs a quick medical checkup; delivery man (Tony Umez) needs to get back to his sick wife; young man (Josh2Funny) wins the lottery but sustains an injury that requires immediate attention; After word of the incident reaches the NCDC’s law enforcement, anybody attempting to leave or enter the facility is met with a “shoot on sight” command. They are unable to attend to their immediate concerns and have to spend the next 21 days isolated in the hospital while putting up with each other.
The Ghost And The Tout Too (Netflix)
A sequel to The Ghost And The Tout, The Ghost And The Tout Too follows a very identical plot, with the exception that Isla (Toyin Abraham) begins to see more ghosts than normal and eventually becomes a messenger for the dead. For these supernatural beings, Isla takes on the role of Charon (the Greek god who transports the dead to the underworld in exchange for payment). She eventually encounters a semi-ghost, Amoke (Osas Ighodaro), a woman in a coma who is caught between life and death, and they have to find the person who poisoned her within the few days she has to live.
Superstar (Prime Video)
Directed by Akay Mason, Superstar follows the story of Queen Ejiro (Nancy Isime), who travels to Lagos after graduating with a degree in theater arts since she has always wanted to be an actress. She serves tables enthusiastically, certain that her natural acting ability will soon cause a stir in Nollywood. Queen seems to have the full support of both her lover (Timini Egbuson) and best friend (Teniola Aladese), who drive her to auditions and provide for her other basic needs. At one of her auditions, she is advised to apply for a reality show to improve her chances of becoming an entertainment star. The show becomes her ticket to stardom, but that is not the end of her struggles. She has to conquer demons from the past and present as she navigates the lonely waters of being a superstar.
The Therapist (Prime Video)
Eloho Odafe (Rita Dominic) is the protagonist of the two-hour film directed by Kayode Kasum, which begins after she leaves her 12-year, abusive, childless marriage. The film explores social concerns concerning women in abusive relationships and the difficulties they experience while attempting to break out. Eloho, who has lost everything in a divorce to her violent ex-husband, tries to aid other women in similar circumstances. She establishes an agency specifically for this goal with the assistance and cooperation of her pals, Gari and Dumebi. Everything changes, though, when Eloho is presented with an offer she cannot refuse.
Ponzi (Prime Video)
Ponzi, another film by Kayode Kasum, follows Chief Olaoba (Jide Kosoko), a wealthy politician, as he reunites with Robert (Mawuli Gavor), his long-lost American son, who introduces people in the hood to the “Reachvest” investment scheme. However, like the many other Ponzi schemes that have come and gone, Reachvest eventually collapses, bringing other problems back to the forefront. The movie, also starring an ensemble of Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Zubby Michael, Timini Egbuson, Tope Tedela and Ikponmwose Gold, addresses the style and alarming rate at which Ponzi schemes are eating deep into Nigeria
La Femme Anjola (Prime Video)
Our protagonist, Dejare (Nonso Bassey), lives on Lagos Island and is a boisterous, self-centered stockbroker by day and a superb saxophonist by night. Thabisa (Mumbi Maina), his lovely and capable fiancée, is his rock, but he’s prepared to give it all up for Anjola (Rita Dominic), the lead singer of a local band, at a Lagos mainland tavern. Anjola is a femme fatale because she is a haughty, sophisticated nightclub owner’s wife who is slick, charming, street-smart, and ambitious; Dejare, who has fallen in love with Anjola and attracted her attention, is a naive young man despite his brilliance. Mildred Okwo directs La Femme Anjola, her second collaboration with Rita Dominic.
Charge And Bail (Prime Video)
Uyoyou Adia’s Charge and Bail is about a young, affluent woman named Boma (Zainab Balogun) who relocates to Nigeria to work for her father’s law firm. Nothing ever goes as planned; her NYSC posting to her father’s competitor completely derails her plans. Even with her strong father’s involvement, she is unable to prevent the decision. The remainder of the story depends on how the spoiled, privileged kid copes with her new surroundings.
Progressive Tailors Club (Prime Video)
Directed by Biodun Stephen and starring Jaiye Kuti, Rachael Oniga, Femi Adebayo, and Uzor Arukwe. Progressive Tailors Club is the comic story of a group of tailors who, after the death of their president, discover massive corruption on the part of their leaders and other dishonest organization members. To avoid future squandering of cash, the organization holds an election after receiving a five million naira gift from a local politician. But it quickly becomes obvious that none of the contenders is clean enough to manage the organization.
Christmas in Miami (Prime Video)
Christmas in Miami centres on an Intercontinental Christmas Fiesta, which brings together six families from six different countries (India, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Brazil, and Nigeria) with diverse cultures to spend the week before Christmas in Miami. Nigeria is represented by Akpos (Ayo Makun), his brother Raphael (Osita Iheme), and his father Dafe (Richard Mofe-Damijo). The celebration’s goal is to unite cultures and demonstrate that culture transcends race or skin color.
Mamba’s Diamond (Prime Video)
Mamba’s Diamond is a fast-paced action comedy about two novice thieves who steal the world’s most precious diamond while attempting to jack a vehicle. As a consequence, these two amateurish crooks are on the run from the city’s fiercest crime boss and her highly experienced, murderous subordinates. Mamba’s Diamond is directed by Seyi Babatope and stars Osas Ighodaro, Gabriel Afolayan, Uchemba Williams, Nse Ikpe-Etim, and Ayo Makun.
The Wait (Netflix)
Nara, an obstetrician who has seen the difficulties of childbirth firsthand, establishes a support group for women to discuss their experiences. Nkechi, a compassionate and cheerful architect who has had problems having children, and Bayo, who joins the group to help his wife, who has had five miscarriages, are among those who take part. Despite being a beacon of hope for pregnant moms, Nara is not without issues. She is facing criticism from her mother and society for her choices after her divorce from a man who duped her. The Wait is a Christian faith-based drama co-directed by Yemi Morafa and Fiyin Gambo, starring Kunle Remi, Ini Dima Okojie, Jimmy Odukoya, Nse Ikpe-Etim, and Kate Henshaw-Nuttal.
Hide and Seek (Prime Video)
Tolu Awobiyi and Adekunle Bryan Oyetunde are the directors of the crime thriller Hide ‘N’ Seek. In the film, a group of self-serving Robin Hoods set out to recover millions of dollars in embezzled public funds from a corrupt politician before he can transfer the money to a mafia-like business partner. However, a nosy fiancée, a handful of double spies, and a sequence of coincidental events force the scheme to fail, with the stolen money changing hands quicker than the speed of the film’s opening few minutes.
Breaded Life (Netflix)
Breaded Life is a follow-up to Biodun Stephen’s 2016 romantic comedy, Picture Perfect. Although it is not a direct sequel to Picture Perfect, it does include some of its characters. Sunmisola (Timini Egbuson) is the protagonist of Breaded Life, a wealthy child who has everything but never seems to know how to behave appropriately. The film recounts a series of fights between him and his mother, as well as his mother’s disapproval of his disruptive behavior. Unfortunately for him, an unanticipated day comes, and he learns the harsh facts of life the hard way. Everyone he knows forgets about him on this terrible day, save a bread hawker called Todowede (Bimbo Ademoye). He has no choice but to seek refuge with Todowede since he has nowhere to live and no one to take him in. Consider a spoilt, affluent youngster who has never worked a day in his life, is out in the cold world with no money, and has no idea how the world works.
Bad Boys and Bridesmaids (Prime Video)
Seyi Babatope (When Love Happens) brings a group of friends together on a wedding journey in Bad Boys and Bridesmaids. The romcom stars Nengi Hampson, Idia Aisien, Jimmie Akinsola, Jidekene Achufusi, Ademola Adedoyin, Mercy Isoyip and Kelly Wekpe. It tells the story of four women who move mountains to protect a pact they all took as teenagers and the men who do the same just to stop them.
