Disney’s highly anticipated series set in a futuristic Lagos, co-produced with Kugali Media, has confirmed a premiere date of February 28 on Disney+ (a service yet to be available in Nigeria).
Ahead of the premiere, new look images have been released alongside the voices set to bring the characters to life on screen.
The confirmed Nigerian voice cast members of Iwaju include Simisola Gbadamosi, Siji Soetan, Femi Branch, Dayo Okeniyi, Weruche Opia, Kehinde Bankole (a voice actor in last year’s Kizazi Moto “Moremi”), Shaffy Bello, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah, Toyin Oshinaike, Bisola Aiyeola and Lala Akindoju (who also doubles as casting director).
Iwájú is a coming-of-age animated series that follows Tola, a young girl from a wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.
This series is directed by Olufikayo Ziki Adeola and produced by Christina Chen, with Adeola and Halima Hudson as screenwriters and music by Re Olunga.
Also debuting on February 28 on Disney+ is Iwájú: A Day Ahead, a documentary special that narrates the journey of the founders of Kugali. The special will showcase how they successfully brought to life an original animation series in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios.
According to the press release, “While the series debuts on Feb. 28 in the US, release timing and distribution platform for select regions, including Nigeria, will be announced shortly.”
Disney’s previous animation project made by African filmmakers is an anthology series titled Kizazi Moto which premiered on Disney+ in July 2023, before a Nigerian special screening in December of that same year.
