Nollywood Films Available to Watch In May 2024

May 1

Aburo

Aburo, a street-smart boy with great sprinting abilities comes face to face with a failed international athlete, Mide who is determined to make him a star. Aburo is tasked with battling through the ties that bind him with his street gang and destiny. The Yemi Morafa-directed film stars Efa Iwara, Toni Tones, Maleek of Ikorodu Bois, and Charles Inojie, showing in cinemas from May 1st.

May 3

Flaws

Director Uyoyou Adia (LIFE, Casa de Novia) returns with another title headed directly to Prime Video. Flaws follows a married couple as their life takes a drastic turn one night when they receive uninvited guests. Flaws stars Kunle Remi, Eso Dike, and Diana Childs.

May 8

Maia

Maia is a faith-based romantic drama starring Ego Nwosu and Mofe Duncan, following Maia’s quest to break a childhood curse and find love. Maia will be available on Prime Video, directed by Bem Pever and written by Emil Garuba and Echobu Garuba.

May 10

Water and Garri

Tiwa Savage’s first lead role in a feature film premieres on Prime Video. It follows an ambitious fashion designer, Aisha as she returns to her native home after 10 years away in the U.S., following a family bereavement. She is met with escalating violence and tension which she must confront. The drama directed by Meji Alabi also stars Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde.

Home and Away

Home and Away is a Nigerian comedy directed by Stanfame Ajalaja and produced by Chisa Akani Ignatius. It stars Sabinus, Broda Shaggi, Bimbo Ademoye and Gregory Ojefua. Home and Away will be in cinemas.

Momiwa

Momiwa, a title that sounds like another narrative from the Sista universe, is directed by Biodun Stephen. The synopsis reads, a beloved housekeeper brings joy until the wife returns, stirring tension and rivalry for affection within the family. Starring Uzor Arukwe, Blessing Jessica Obasi and Iyabo Ojo, the film will be available on Prime Video.

May 17

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti

A biopic about one of the most revered activists and fearless leaders in Nigeria, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, as she sparks a revolution against colonialism and patriarchy forever transforming the destiny of her nation. The film is directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and stars Kehinde Bankole, Joke Silva and Adunni Ade. After a stint of direct-to-Netflix releases by director Austen-Peters, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti will be available in cinemas. 

UNO: The F in Family

Ebuka Njoku (Yahoo+)  heads directly to the cinemas with his second film, UNO, a family dramedy starring Nkem Owoh, Jennifer Eliogu, Alvin Abayomi, Tomi Ojo, Keezyto, Sophia Chisom and DJ Capello. The film follows a young man who reunites with his estranged family after 10 years and rocks his entire dysfunctional family with his return. 

May 30

Kill Boro

The long-awaited feature Kill Boro should be available on Prime Video on this latest announced date. Set in a rustic town by the river, Courage Obayuwana’s Kill Boro is a gritty tale of redemption and sacrifice starring Ini Dima-Okojie, Philip Asaya, Kosisochukwu Ogboruche, Greg Ojefua, Hilda Dokubo and Brutus Richard.

May 31

CRIMINAL

A race against time is what Criminal promises in this hostage thriller starring Uzor Arukwe, Funlola Aofiyebi Raimi, Gbubemi Ejeye and Segun Arinze. Directed by first-timer Dolapo Adigun and produced by Anthill Studios (producers of Mikolo, House of Secrets, Casa De Novia), CRIMINAL will be in cinemas.

Postcards

From the makers of Namaste Wahala comes another Nollywood-Bollywood production, Postcards. It is set in cosmopolitan Mumbai and Lagos where the lives of several characters intersect in a series of life-changing events when a Nigerian mother travels to India for a medical checkup. This series, directed by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, stars Sola Sobowale, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Rajniesh Duggall, Rahama Sadau, Nancy Isime and Tobi Bakre. It will be available to stream on Netflix.

Big Girl Small World

Big Girl Small World is a Kenyan romcom series that follows a plus-size woman (June Njenga) who stumbles through a journey of self-discovery after a humiliating scandal. In the process, she finds out what it means to live big in a world determined to shrink her. The 13-part series which features an all-female writing team will be available on Showmax.

The Idea of You

The Idea of You is a romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, telling the story of a love affair between a 40-year-old single mother and the lead singer of a popular boy band. It will be available on Prime Video.

May 3

Unfrosted

Unfrosted is a Netflix comedy film directed by Jerry Seinfeld in his debut, starring Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, James Marsden, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, Christian Slater, and Hugh Grant. The film is loosely based on the true story of the creation of Pop-Tarts, the popular American breakfast pastry.

May 6

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer tells the true story of “the father of the atomic bomb”, American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), and how he risked destroying the world in his attempt to save it. The Christopher Nolan film took home the Best Pictures and Best Director awards at the Oscars amongst other nods. Also starring Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Matt Damon, the 2023 film will be available on Showmax. Other Nolan films hitting Showmax this month are Inception, Dunkirk, and Interstellar.

A Good Person

A Good Person is written and directed by Zach Braff, starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. It follows Allison, whose life falls apart following her involvement in a fatal accident. The 2023 film will be available on Showmax.

Kingdom of the Planet Apes

Kingdom of the Planet Apes, the fourth installment in the highly acclaimed Planet of Apes reboot franchise, heads to cinemas. The film, set years after the rise of Caesar,  sees a young ape go on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

Trolls Band Together

The 2023 installment of the animated musical comedy will be available on Showmax. The voice cast includes Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Anderson .Paak, Kenan Thompson, Kid Cudi, Daveed Diggs, Troye Sivan, Camila Cabello, Amy Schumer, and RuPaul.

Retribution

A bank executive (Liam Neeson) receives a bomb threat while driving his children to school that his car will explode if they stop and get out. Retribution is another 2023 film set for Showmax.

Barbie

Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie will be available on Showmax. The fantasy comedy is a live-action adaptation of the Barbie animated films which were inspired by the toy line.

Inside is a 2023 psychological thriller that follows an art thief (Willem Dafoe) who is trapped inside a luxury penthouse, slowly losing his grip on reality. It will be available on Showmax.

Atlas

This Jennifer Lopez-led sci-fi action thriller follows a brilliant but anti-social data analyst with a deep distrust of AI who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past leading to the plan going awry. The film will be available on Netflix.

A Man in Full

Facing relentless foes and sudden bankruptcy, an Atlanta real estate tycoon must claw his way back to the top when his empire begins to crumble. The 6-episode limited series, directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme based on Tom Wolfe’s novel of the same name, will be available on Netflix.

May 9

Bodkin

Catch Bodkin, a comedy thriller series that follows a couple of podcasters as they set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in an idyllic Irish town. It premieres on Netflix.

Bridgerton S3 Part 1

Determined to move on from Colin Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington sets out to find a husband, only to receive help from the last person she expects. Bridgerton season 3 part 1, consisting of 4 episodes, will be available on Netflix.

ERIC
