🛑Spoiler Alert for the following movies and TV shows: The Vampire Diaries, Call Me By Your Name, The Notebook, Glee, Elite, Forrest Gump, My best Friend’s Wedding, Twilight, Cheese in the Trap and La La Land.
There is no getting around it, break-ups always hurt and they are terrible especially if it is with someone you had so many good memories with. At some point in our lives, we have been through that phase of pain and helplessness, and for some, joy. We all have our break-up stories, but hey! it is not the end of the world. There are so many heart-wrenching movies out there that show us the kind of relationship we desire. Some scenes are unforgettable and some seem relatable, like our past relationship playing right in front of our eyes.
Here are some unforgettable break-ups and heartbreaks that have taken place on our screens:
This list is purely based on my opinion.
Stefan and Elena- The Vampire Diaries
The love triangle in The Vampire Diaries is epic, if not one of the best I have ever seen in a movie. Fans of the show are either team Stelena or Delena, viewers can’t be both or maybe they can cos I was rooting for whoever Elena (Nina Dobrev) ended up with between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley). Even after everything, the sacrifices, the fights, and the dangers, Elena still decided to break up with Stefan because she thought her life revolved around him and she was losing her friendship with people because of him.
Adding that something about her has changed, yunno all these silly excuses people make when they wanna break up—boring!🥱. Like wtf! (pardon my language) Stefan bled for Elena, he loved her more than life itself and would do anything to protect her, including her family and friends. But what should Stefan have done when the girl he loves broke up with him for his brother? Stefan was loyal to a fault, which is a good thing right? But look what that got him—a broken heart.
Elio and Oliver- Call Me By Your Name
I have a thing for this movie and it is unexplainable. A forbidden desire, an intense attraction between 17-year old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a graduate student, who never realised the love story they deserved. The movie is not just about sex but love, one that is frightening and tormenting. It is a gay love story, a story of first love and a hot Italian summer.
The chemistry between Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer in the movie was fascinating and unique. Here, viewers experience a growing apart kind of break up. It is also a movie about lust and selflessness. Most crushingly, a love that should have lasted forever but didn’t. In summary, a ship that never took off. This movie really hurt me more than I can imagine but we move😅.
Allie and Noah- The Notebook
The movie reminds us of what it means to be young and in love for the first time. Allie and Noah’s relationship gives us hope that there is always going to be that one person for every being on earth, that’s what I think anyway. Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie’s (Rachel McAdams) relationship was a stormy one due to the social class difference, intervening parents and disagreements/complications on what works best for the future.
They were so much in love that the break up seemed to be the end of the world at first. They became selfish with their love after years of excruciating separation and were able to withstand the problems that confronted them together. Love is really not easy. *sighs*
Blaine and Kurt- Glee
Yay!!! This is one of my favourite couples ever. Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) are one of the best-loved couples in Glee. Their relationship was the frustrating type, one that makes you scream at the TV: “these two morons should just be together already.”
The relationship had a lot of ups and downs and was difficult to watch most times. The series depicts a true test of relationship and how it demands a lot of sacrifices. There is nothing like a perfect partner, it is up to us blah blah blah…you already know.
Ander and Omar- Elite
I am crying right now just thinking about these two, just kidding. They ended up together at the end of the third season but their break up almost wrecked me. Like, why did they have to break up in the first place? Ander (Arón Piper) had cancer, so he felt “oh, I am just holding my lover down, he needs to move on with his life”, hence the break up. Is that not the whole point of being in a relationship? Being there for each other when things get hard. The writers almost ruined a good love story, they probably thought viewers like me might stop watching the show if they did not get the two morons back together.
Forrest and Jenny- Forrest Gump
I am sure some viewers, if not most, cursed Jenny (Robin Wright) throughout the movie. I think Jenny loved Forrest (Tom Hanks) throughout the movie. She loved him so much that she thought she was taking advantage of him. She didn’t realize she was wrong until it was too late. We all make mistakes when it comes to love, we feel someone is too good for us so we think leaving them is the answer even though it means hurting that person. That is such a useless notion.
Forrest was a dimwit in the movie, someone with a low IQ. Everything he did throughout the movie was linked to Jenny. To him, he was nothing without her. The two reconnect after years of separation even though her life was short lived thereafter.
Julianne and Michael- My Best Friend’s Wedding
Julianne (Julia Roberts) finds out her childhood friend (Dermot Mulroney) is getting married. Yay!!! That should be a good news to her but she later realizes that she has been in love with him all along. Then she goes to the wedding not to wish him well but to ruin it—only to be rejected—Ouch😑.
I don’t know why people have to suppress their feelings for so long. Just tell that person you like him/her already and let’s all move on. It is gonna be a yes or no, definitely not the end of the world. An advice coming from someone who will never tell someone she likes him😂.
Bella and Edward- Twilight
I still don’t understand how/why people think leaving someone you love is the best solution when faced with adversities. It is never the answer, but we humans just enjoy making things hard for ourselves. Maybe the situation in the movie is different because it involves blood-sucking vampires. But then leaving someone you love in pain is never the answer.
Yoo Jung and Hong Seol- Cheese in the Trap
Cheese in the trap is a very contentious drama. Yoo Jung (Park Hae Jin) and Hong Seol (Kim Go Eun) became a couple in a really weird way. Hong Seol is an introvert, she just wants to live a quiet school life without any drama and would rather avoid a person than get into a fight or argument. Yoo Jung on the other hand, is a sociopath beneath all his sweetness and loveliness. He is a very manipulative person and fucks up anybody that screws with him without directly getting involved (he is the paying evil with evil kind of person). What a terrible combination!
They had a really rocky relationship, but one thing was evident, they both loved each other a lot. Yoo Jung, however, couldn’t deal with his shit so he broke up with her because he felt she would keep getting hurt because of him. There was a hint that they later ended up together but it wasn’t really clear. It isn’t like the usual K-drama we see everyday.
Mia and Sebastian- La La Land
If you are in a musical mood, La La Land can do the work. I watched an entire movie rooting for Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) to make their dream come true and live happily ever after, only to be disappointed. The movie is a heartbreaking one 😢. It makes us realize that relationships are part of the growth process and that we should always follow our dreams. You may not end up with the love of your life and that is just fine, it happens.
A good love story doesn’t necessarily mean a happy ending. We all handle pain differently, we fantasize what life would have been like with that special someone that got away and how we would have been so good to and with each other. Maybe the relationship would have turned out well or perhaps you dodged a bullet. Love is just love, so unpredictable and we must live with that.
I am not going to come up with a quote or any line that love is this or that. I hope this has set you in the mood for the month of February. In any case you are thinking of getting out of that relationship you think you don’t deserve, one or all of these recommendations might just be able to inspire you.
We have all had our fair share of heartbreaks, perhaps it might not be the case for everyone. So, from this list of tear-jerking movies/TV shows, which will you remove or add? I am just gonna leave this love thing to you guys. Ciao😉

Quite a list you’ve here. I also think about the couple from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey
I haven’t seen that…but i am sure it will be a nice movie…Jim Carrey is a really great actor
It’s such a beautiful movie. You can imagine as it features Kate Winslet.
I think Mia and Sebastian’s is just how life could be sometimes…sadly!😭
Yeah…their love story is a sad one
How have I not watched most of these movies and I claim to be a movie freak. OMG!
I’ve only seen Cheep in the Trap, Elite and The Notebook(I can’t remember what happened there)
The break up in Cheese in the Trap and Elite are slightly similar. For Cheese in the Trap, as rightly said, Yoo Jung is a sociopath and along the line, he felt he wasn’t deserving of of Hong Seol’s love and loyalty. Same can be said about Andre who felt Omar was too good for him and needed to do something more valuable with his life rather than taking care of him (Andre).
They are quite similar…I dont know why people think like that…like what is the point of a relationship if the first think you think about is pushing people away when there is a problem
true stelena breakup was really heartbreaking I was 13 when I watched it and even after 9 years the scene makes me cry.😥
Yeah…I know right
I was kinda expecting it coz that elena isnt a stable human being…the only time I really cried was when stefan died😩
