The 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominations have been announced, with Femi Adebayo’s Seven Doors leading the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Movie and Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa). Lisabi: The Uprising and Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre also received significant recognition across multiple categories. However, fans and film lovers have bemoaned the exclusion of With Difficulty Comes Ease despite being submitted.

A standout occurrence this year is the impressive number of films that premiered at the 2024 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) receiving nominations across various categories.

These include Agemo, Phoenix Fury, Brukaci, Freedom Way, Princess on a Hill, Skeleton Coast, The Man Died, A Ghetto Love Story, The Incredible Sensational Fiancee of Seyi Ajayi, and The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos, showcasing the growing influence of festival films in mainstream awards.

This year’s AMVCA features 27 award categories, 9 of which are open to public voting—one fewer than the originally announced 28.

  1. Christmas in Lagos getting a nomination for Best Movie is undeserved. What it should have gotten for Best Cinematography instead. The DoP did a great job of making the city of Lagos a character in the movie.

RMD getting for best supporting actor is deserved though. He was the best part of that movie.
