Golden Globes 2021: The Nominations

The nominations for this year’s Golden Globes, given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were made known today. The categories cover television as well as motion picture programming. The nominations in the motion picture category always give hints on what is to come at the Academy Awards.

Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 lead in the by motion picture category with six and five nominations respectively. In the television series and program category, The Crown nabs 6 nominations, five goes to Schitt’s Creek and four for Ozark, and The Undoing. 
Netflix rules in both categories, boasting 42 nominations, while HBO Max (2) and Apple TV+ (2) grab first time nominations.

Little surprise that streaming services claim the most nominations this year. However, we might be starting to see the effects of ‘Peak TV’, as a number of performances were snubbed. At the same time, a few surprises find their way in there. Sadly, everyone can’t go home with a prize. Who actually deserves to be awarded? Do such prize giving bodies lose relevance with time?

This year’s prize giving will take place on Feb. 28 on NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to host the Golden Globes, after their previous gigs as hostesses between 2013 and 2015.
