While there are not so many movies to look forward to in January, there are two artistic Nollywood titles to be excited about, and quite a number of returning TV shows.
Highlight of New Films in January Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke; sequel to 2018 Niyi Akinmolayan’s Chief Daddy directed for EbonyLife. Release date: January 1, on Netflix. The Tender Bar; Directed by George Clooney, Ben Affleck stars in this coming-of-age small town drama. Release date: January 7, on Amazon Prime Video. The Making of the King; AMA Psalmist directs this documentary that takes viewers behind the scenes of Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys. Release date: January 7, on Netflix. Belfast; A semi-autobiographical black and white film directed by Kenneth Branaugh. Release date: January 14, in cinemas. For Maria: Ebun Pataki; In one of the newest voices in Nollywood, rising filmmaker Damilola Orimogunje sits in the director’s chair for this unusual Nollywood narrative, his feature debut that toured quite a number of festivals in 2021. Juju Stories; After a limited release through CanalOlympia in 2021, an AFRIFF directorial win, touring festivals, nabbing a place in WKMUp’s 2021 Nollywood films of the year, Surreal16 can finally, through FilmOne, bring their horror anthology to Nigerians. Release date: January 21, in cinemas. Munich: The Edge of War; Jeremy Irons stars in this British espionage thriller set in the run up to World War II. Release date: January 21, on Netflix. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild; a new installment in the Disney Ice Age franchise. Release date: January 28, on Disney+. Dinner at My Place; a Nollywood romcom starring Bisola Aiyeola, Sophie Alakija and Timini Egbuson. Release date: January 28, in cinemas.
