The countdown to the end of Showmax as a standalone platform is now firmly underway. The bigger question is no longer whether it will shut down, but what becomes of its content. MultiChoice has now provided clarity.
After a confirmation to subscribers a week ago, the company, in a press release, has officially confirmed that Showmax Originals will transition to DStv Stream, where they will be housed in a dedicated Showmax section within the app from April 1, 2026, ahead of the platform’s official closure on April 30, 2026.
“This move reflects DStv’s long-term commitment to streaming,” said Kemi Omotosho, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, describing it as a move toward a single platform that combines on-demand entertainment and live television.

For current users, the transition is designed to be largely seamless. Existing Showmax customers will be migrated to DStv Stream on the Compact package, where they will continue streaming until May 31, 2026, at no additional cost. After this period, continued access will depend on maintaining an active DStv subscription.
At the centre of the transition is a curated Showmax section featuring some of the platform’s most recognisable titles, including WURA, Flawsome, Cheta’M, Princess on a Hill, and Under the Influence, alongside continental hits like The Wife (South Africa) and Single Kiasi (Kenya), with more titles expected to be added in the coming weeks. On DStv Stream, Showmax titles will sit alongside more than 100 live TV channels, a large on-demand library of local and international films and series, kids’ programming, and live sports. This integrated approach contrasts with Showmax’s previous structure, where entertainment and sports were split across separate plans.
Sports, in particular, gets a significant upgrade. Through SuperSport on DSTV Stream, consumers will have access to major competitions such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Serie A, along with channels like ESPN. This expands significantly on Showmax’s earlier sports offering, which was limited to mobile-only access on select plans. DStv Stream also offers a more robust viewing experience across devices, including mobile phones, smart TVs, laptops, Android TV, Apple TV, and Hisense TVs. Features include live TV with pause and rewind, “Watch from Start,” offline downloads, and personalized recommendations positions.
Structurally, the difference between both services is clear. DStv Stream operates as an all-in-one ecosystem, combining live TV, on-demand content, and sports within a single platform, supported by features like shared billing and rewards. Showmax, by contrast, followed a more segmented model without live TV, with limited sports access, and requiring multiple plans though it maintained an ad-free experience.
For viewers, the value proposition is straightforward: more content in one place. Subscribers on Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium packages will now have access to Showmax Originals alongside live TV, international content, sports, and kids’ programming within a single platform. Still, the shift marks the end of an era.
After April 30, 2026, Showmax will no longer exist as a standalone service.
