Chiemeka Osuagwu Makes Directorial Debut With Showmax’s Latest Nigerian Original ‘Dead Of Night’

Chiemeka Osuagwu is officially making his feature directorial debut with Showmax’s latest Nigerian Original, Dead of Night. Released on March 22, this new project is the platform’s first Nigerian horror movie.

Set in the quiet Ekeoba village, the gripping story follows the robbery plan of three teenage girls, Chinaza, Onyi, and Ihuoma, which takes a terrifying turn when they become trapped in an abandoned mansion with dark secrets. Haunted by mysterious forces, they must navigate a horror labyrinth to escape the clutches of Onwu, an evil entity determined to claim their souls.

The three ladies are played by fresh faces in Nollywood: Favour Etim, Diana Egwatu, and Nene Aliemeke. The horror movie’s cast includes Kunle Idowu (Frank Donga), Eric Obinna (Inside Life, Razz Guy), Allison Precious, and Chuks Joseph (The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi).

“We wanted to delve into the rich tapestry of Nigerian folklore and superstition, while also delivering a spine-chilling horror experience”, said Femi D. Ogunsanwo, the movie’s executive producer. “This movie explores themes of fear, guilt, greed, and redemption, all within the context of a gripping supernatural thriller. I’m excited for audiences to immerse themselves in this dark world we’ve created.”

Prior to Dead of Night, Osuagwu has had an enviable career as a serial TV writer with over 600 hours, working on web series MTV Shuga Naija, AfMag’s Hush, UnbrokenEnakhe, and Forbidden, as a head writer on Rok’s Man Pikin, and animation Ladybuckit and the Motley Mopsters.

His film credits include Far From Home (2022)his first theatrical film – The Blood Covenant (2022), and  A Weekend to Forget (2023). He has also directed the award-winning short film Samaria (2022), which had an impressive international festival run.

His latest project, Dead of Night, is currently available on Showmax.
