KOB has finally landed (insert a profound Yoruba proverb about a boil bursting). How did y’all enjoy the groundbreaking Netflix series. Netflix might just have found their OWN Nollywood franchise, and we can only hope it gets better from here! With no access to subscriber count, I am quite confident that they gained quite a lot of subscribers in August, with the release of additional Nollywood movies like the historical ‘76, Kenneth Gyang’s The Lost Cafe, highly sought after Ije: The Journey, 2020’s Quam’s Money, and Play Network’s remake of Nneka the Pretty Serpent. In September, they hope we would still be enjoying and rewatching the KOB series, while only releasing titles like the highest-grossing Nollywood film, Omo Ghetto: The Saga; EbonyLife’s Castle & Castle, and book-adaptation, The Smart Money Woman. I hope they have other unannounced releases, if not, we should be ready to end the year with quite a number of other exciting Nollywood titles.
In theatrical Nollywood news, Ayinla has grossed over 90 million naira so far, in what is a huge win for alternative stories in the industry. Congratulations to Greoh Studios, Jade Osiberu, Tunde Kelani and the whole team. We are looking forward to what Greoh has cooking for us next, with Osiberu’s latest, Gangs of Lagos—starring Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Tobi Bakre, and Chike—entering the post production stage.
Going abroad, are you team Gunn or Team Ayer? DC’s latest, The Suicide Squad, has performed woefully at the box office despite improved critic reviews. A number of factors have been blamed, but this second iteration still remains divided among DC fanboys. We reviewed it and we thought Gunn gunned his version *wink wink*.
Fans of American TV shows can also look forward to the return of quite a number of them, commonly referred to as the Fall Season Premiere. We have got Billions, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Chicago Med, Bob Hearts Abishola, etc (see bottom of this page for more and their dates). On the streaming scene, Sex Education and Money Heist are making a return to Netflix this month.
