Watch Teaser: Netflix Picks Up Nigerian Workplace Drama Series ‘Becoming Abi’, Sets October Premiere

Netflix has picked up a Nigerian workplace drama series produced by Evolving Light Studios, Becoming Abi, to premiere globally on October 28, 2022.

The teaser (watch below) throws our protagonist Abi (Bolu Essien) into the madhouse of Lagos advertising, which sees her go through a range of emotions, while we catch our first glimpse at her colleagues, clients, best friend and potential love interest(s).

Starring in Abi’s world are recent Netflix faces Seun Ajayi (The Lost Okoroshi) and Akah Nnani (The Man of God), AMVCA-winner Stan Nze (Rattlesnake), Juliana Olayode (Jenifa’s Diary); Biodun Stephen (Picture Perfect), Ifeanyi Kalu (Cougars), Iya Rainbow (Oga Bolaji), Benita A. Okojie and Opeyemi Akintunde.

Created, written, co-directed, and produced by Bolu Essien (Things That Broke Us) who also plays the titular character Abi, Becoming Abi is inspired by true-life events, as it unravels the story of a young millennial who works her way through many daunting challenges while working in one of Nigeria’s leading advertising agencies.

The 6-part dramedy series shows how a young “Abi” navigates her new workplace – co-existing with her new boss, exploring friendship, career, love, and faith in a fun, quirky, and relatable way.

Birthing the idea in June 2021 and shooting in October 2021, the show creator was inspired by the storytelling approaches of Issa Rae and Michaela Coel who create very relatable human stories and quirky characters. Essien envisioned telling a story that would fully explore characters in a workplace in Nigeria, “with Becoming Abi I wanted to explore the realities of people like me, office complexities, and female friendships,” putting her professional experience in marketing and advertising into play and ensuring there is a thin thread of ‘Becoming’ across the six 30-40 minute episodes of the series.

Becoming Abi was co-directed by Terrel Ejem and Bolu Essien, and produced by Emmanuel Essien, Victoria Ogar and the series lead. The cinematography was helmed by MrMovies Oyedele.
