Overview

Are you a Cinephile and Nollyphile with excellent writing, editing skills and a desire to contribute to an engaging online film community? We are currently expanding our team at What Kept Me Up (WKMUp).

WKMUp is actively hiring for the role of an Assistant Editor who will work hand in hand with the managing editor. This role will play a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the stories and content across our platforms. Working closely with other members of the team, you will contribute to the creation and publication of engaging and insightful articles related to the film world with a major focus on Nollywood. This role requires a passion for movies (Nollywood & Hollywood), content ideation, excellent writing and editing skills, and a keen eye for detail.

About Us

What Kept Me Up is a digital publication that focuses on films and TV. We serve readers with news, reviews, articles, trivia, and fun bits in the film world. Most importantly, getting people engaged in conversations on what kept them up. The discussion with readers matters.

Tasks

  • Contributing to the ideation process of informative content, including movie reviews, interviews, and news.
  • Collaborating with guest writers to ensure articles meet the blog’s style, tone, and editorial guidelines.
  • Editing and proofreading articles for grammar, and overall clarity.
  • Providing constructive feedback to guest writers for improvement and adherence to editorial standards.
  • Ensuring articles are formatted appropriately and follow the blog’s style guide.
  • Staying updated on current trends, news, and releases within the film industry.
  • Conducting research to enhance the depth and accuracy of articles.
  • Working closely with the managing editor, guest writers, and other stakeholders to brainstorm ideas and timely prompts and planning editorial calendars.
  • Collaborating with the social media team to promote blog content on various platforms.
  • Suggesting and creating engaging social media posts and news.
  • Monitoring user comments and engagement on articles, ensuring a positive and respectful online community.
  • Identifying and resolving any issues related to content quality and user experience.
  • Attending industry events to represent the brand when needed.
  • Coordinating & organizing the media team for media coverage, events and activities.

Qualification

  • Previous experience in a similar editorial role, preferably within the film industry.
  • Strong passion for and knowledge of film especially Nollywood, including film history, genres, and current industry trends.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with attention to detail and the ability to adapt to different styles.
  • Graphic design skills for creating visuals for articles.
  • Familiarity with SEO.
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Google Suite, and Canva.
  • Proficient understanding of various social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, TikTok) to craft high-quality posts.
  • Networking skills to build relationships within the industry.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with the capacity to meet deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration within a team.

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Film Studies, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools to track content performance.
