The nominations for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) have now been unveiled, setting the stage for the awards ceremony scheduled for May 9. This year’s list arrives with a few clear signals about where Nollywood is at the moment, both in terms of the films leading the conversation, the current issues, proffered solutions and the kind of projects getting recognised.
The Best Movie category, in particular, is entirely dominated by titles that had cinema runs, which reemphasises the much-talked-about pullback by international streaming platforms compared to previous years when Netflix and Prime Video were fairly represented in the category.
Among the titles leading the race are Gingerrr and The Herd, tied at nine nominations each, followed by To Kill a Monkey with eight and My Father’s Shadow with seven. All four titles appear across major categories, including Best Movie, Best Director, and the acting categories. The Serpent’s Gift (6), 3 Cold Dishes (6) and Funke Akindele’s Behind the Scenes (5) all got at least five nominations each.
On an individual level, a number of names cut across multiple films, each earning nominations in different categories. In technical categories, a notable achievement is Emmanuel Igbekele’s recognition in Best Cinematography, with three nominations for his work on The Herd, The Serpent’s Gift, and Gingerrr, marking his first-ever AMVCA nominations. Tolu Obanro also received two nominations each in Best Sound/Sound Design and Best Music/Score categories for Gingerrr and The Party.
In the acting categories, Linda Ejiofor earns nominations in both lead and supporting for The Herd and The Serpent’s Gift, while Femi Branch is recognised in lead and supporting for Red Circle and Owambe Thieves. Uzor Arukwe picks up nominations for Colours of Fire and Behind the Scenes, and Lateef Adedimeji secures multiple nods for Red Circle, Gingerrr, and Lisabi 2.
Yet another observation with this year’s nominations is the recognition of industry veterans. Ifeoma Fafunwa, a veteran thespian who appeared on screen for the first time in The Lost Days, was nominated for Best Lead Actress alongside other screen veterans like Gloria Anozie-Young, Sola Sobowale, and Bimbo Akintola. The wider nominations include names like Tunde Kelani, Kanayo O. Kanayo, a showing that may as well be the influence of the new head judge, Joke Silva, who takes over from Femi Odugbemi.
This year, the AMVCA positions itself as a pan-African organisation by introducing two Best Indigenous Film categories to represent North and Central Africa. In total, the 12th AMVCA will feature 32 award categories, comprising 18 jury-voting categories, 11 public voting categories, and 3 special recognition awards, including Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer honours to be presented on the awards day.
