This year’s Academy Awards ceremony was presented by Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer in a night one would describe as that of “fire and ice”. Last year’s Oscars was dominated by Nomadland which won Best Picture, Best Actress (Frances McDormand) and Best Director (Chloe Zhao) but this year’s biggest winner is Dune which bagged six awards. The Power of the Dog won only from the Directing category even though it dominated multiple categories. However, the 94th Academy Awards ceremony was overshadowed by an altercation between this year’s Oscar Best Actor, Will Smith and Chris Rock, which ensued because of a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Smith walked up on stage and hit Rock in the face, before shouting at him “leave my wife’s name out of your f***g mouth”.
The 94th Academy Award ceremony set a number of milestones with CODA being the first streaming service film (Apple TV+) to win Best Picture; Ariana DeBose became the first queer black woman to win in an acting category and Troy Kotsur of CODA became the first deaf man to win an Oscar Award for acting. With the shock and surprises in this year’s ceremony, “this is indeed the greatest night in the history of television”.
