August 1

Desecration

An extramarital affair threatens Dr. Daniels’ perfect family when his free-spirited conquest wants more and would go to great lengths to achieve it. Desecration stars Rita Dominic, Joseph Benjamin, and Nicola Alexis. Directed by Niyi Towolawi, the 2017 film will be available to stream on Prime Video.

Akudaaya (The Wraith)

Akudaaya in Yoruba mythology is a person who passes before their time, then gains a new life in their same form elsewhere to complete their destined years on earth. Akudaaya (The Wraith) promises to tell an intriguing story of a man, his fate and a rare second chance given to him. The Olamide Akinmolayan film stars Sola Sobowale, Olumide Oworu and Bukunmi Oluwasina. Akudaaya is coming to cinemas. 

August 10

Jagun Jagun

From the makers of King of Thieves comes this new period film set around the Yoruba culture. Jagun Jagun stars Femi Adebayo, Adedimeji Lateef, Bukunmi Oluwashina, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Yekini Itele, Yinka Quadri, Adebayo Salami, Fathia Balogun and Dele Odule. Set in an ancient Yoruba kingdom, a bloodthirsty warlord feels threatened by a young warrior whose only desires are power and the love of a strong woman. Jagun Jagun will be available on Netflix.

August 11

The One for Sarah

The One For Sarah follows Sarah, who has been through emotional abuse and is on the path to rediscover her self-worth and find love. The 2022 romantic drama, starring Beverly Naya, Bucci Franklin, Uzor Arukwe and Daniel Etim-Effiong, will make its streaming debut on Netflix.

August 15

In Bed with the Pedros

Jide and Hauwa Pedro accidentally run over a teenage girl while having a lover’s spat on their way from an event. Jide refuses Hauwa’s request of taking the girl to a hospital having thought of the doom that awaits his political career and family name. Starring Ademola Adedoyin, Rahama Sadau, Adunni Ade and Akin Lewis, this is the second film by Niyi Towolawi that will be available to stream on Prime Video this month.

August 18

A Bag of Trouble

A Bag of Trouble stars Broda Shaggi, Bimbo Oshin, Jide Kosoko, Hafiz Oyetoro and Sabinus, written and directed by Michael Chimex Onwunali (who worked as an assistant director on Foreigner’s God). A Bag of Trouble follows a struggling young man whose world comes to a halt after receiving a token of gratitude from a wealthy politician. Suddenly finding himself rich beyond his imagination, he must fight the figments of his mind and the evil he perceives closing in, or slide back into the tough world he knows that knows him too well. It has been teased so far as a comedy film and will be in cinemas. A Bag of Trouble has now been moved to September 1.

The Modern Woman

Directed by Yomi Black, The Modern Woman tells the story of a young woman’s carefully balanced life, torn between career, family, and love, spirals into chaos when she faces the devastating loss of her pregnancy. In a fight to reclaim her identity, she must navigate a treacherous path towards self-discovery, challenging societal norms and embracing her own truth. The film stars Bimbo Akintola, Timini Egbuson and Sharon Ooja. The Modern Woman will be in cinemas.

Trepidation

Written and directed by Ini Otu Usendiah, Trepidation follows an Ibibio woman whose childhood nightmares return after a visit to her village. It touches on mental health and its relationship with superstitions, religion, witchcraft and childhood traumas. The cast includes Theresa Edem, Preach Bassey and Tersy Akpata. It will be in cinemas. 

Mikolo

The live-action CGI family kids’ adventure movie directed by Niyi Akinmolayan is coming to cinemas. The cast will include Pamilerin Ayodeji, Fiyinfoluwa Asenuga, Yvonne Jegede and Daniel Etim-Effiong. Niyi Akinmolayan is also on the project as the writer, produced by Anthill Studios. 

August 25

Kesari

Starring Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Yekinni (Itele), Lateef Adedimeji, Yemi Elesho, Kelvin Ikeduba and Yvonne Jege, Kesari is a Yoruba language film produced by Ibrahim Yekinni and co-directed by Yekinni and Tope Adebayo.

The Rise of Igbinogun

A warrior incurs the fury of the king’s guards but becomes a legend among the people when she steals from the rich to empower the poor. Starring Femi Branch, Damilare Kuku, Akin Lewis, Enyinna Nwigwe, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Shaffy Bello, the 2021 epic film will be available on Netflix. The Rise of Igbinogun has been moved to October 6.

August 27

Can You See Us?

Can You See Us?, Zambian’s first film on Netflix, is a tale that is inspired by a true life story. It is the story of a little boy, Joseph, who lives with albinism. It highlights the many challenges he faces growing up and how music and love become his solace and strength to overcome. Directed by Kenny Roc Mumba, Can You See Us? stars Ruthe Jule, Thabo Kaamba, Kohndwani Elliot Zulu, Robert Nyirenda (Big Rob), George Sikazwe As Older Joseph, and Francisca M. Muchangwe.

Fatal Seduction Vol 2

South African series Fatal Seduction Volume 2 will be released on Netflix after the first volume which became a global hit in July. The erotic thriller series follows a married professor who is pulled into a passionate affair with a younger man that uncovers a path of tragedy and betrayal from those closest to her. Heart of Stone

The mystery film follows Rachel Stone, an intelligence agent who is given a deadly mission to protect “The Heart” from the other side. Gal Gadot leads the spy action film along with Alia Bhatt, Jamie Dornan, Sophie Okonedo, Matthias Schweighöfer and Jing Lusi. Heart of Stone will be available to stream on Netflix. 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back and are ready to be accepted as normal teenage boys in New York City. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be in cinemas. 

Gran Turismo

This sports drama follows Jann, a race car gamer who gets an opportunity to be a professional race car driver. Inspired by true events of Jann Mardenborough’s life, Gran Turismo is based on the PlayStation video game series. It will be showing in cinemas.

Red, White and Royal Blue

Based on the New York Times bestseller, Red, White & Royal Blue centers around Alex, the president’s son, and Britain’s Prince Henry whose long-running feud threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations. When the rivals are forced into a staged truce, their icy relationship begins to thaw and the friction between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

The Black Phone

Set in the late 1970s, The Black Phone stars Ethan Hawke as a sadistic killer who kidnaps Finney, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy. Trapped in a soundproof basement, Finney finds a lifeline when a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring and he discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims, who are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney. Produced by Jason Blum and directed by Scott Derrickson, the 2021 film will be available on Showmax.

Bodies Bodies Bodies is a 2022 comedy slasher that follows a group of rich 20-year-olds who plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion. The Last Voyage of the Demeter

The ship, Demeter is doomed on a voyage. The horror film was adapted from the novel ‘Dracula’. Starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, David Dastmalchian, Javier Botet, Liam Cunningham and Woody Norman, The Last Voyage of the Demeter will be in cinemas.

The Monkey King

A stick-wielding monkey teams with a young girl on an epic quest for immortality, battling demons, dragons, gods — and his own ego — along the way. The animated comedy film will be available on Netflix.

M3GAN

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. When its designer, Gemma, becomes the unexpected caretaker of her eight-year-old niece, Cady, she decides to pair the girl with a M3GAN prototype, a decision that has terrifying consequences. The horror thriller will be available on Showmax.

Retribution

The crime film follows a man who receives a bomb threat and is left with no choice but to follow the culprit’s instructions. Starring Liam Neeson, Retribution, an action thriller, will be in cinemas. 

F9 The Fast Saga

The 2021 ninth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be available to stream on Netflix from August 25.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah

School drama attempts to ruin Stacy and Lydia’s friendship as they plan for their Bat Mitzvah. The Adam Sandler-led comedy film will be available on Netflix on August 25.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On follows an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colourful existence with his grandmother, Connie, and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and new hope for finding his long-lost family. The Oscar-nominated 2021 animated film will be available on Showmax.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart S1

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of Alice Hart, who loses her parents at the age of 9 and is forced to live with her grandmother June at her flower farm where she learns about the secrets of her family’s past. The mini series starring Sigourney Weaver will be available on Prime Video.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan S2

Power Book III: Raising Kanan follows 15-year-old Kanan Stark as he makes a bid to join the growing family business. Mekai Curtis returns in Season 2 as the young Kanan, the character played in Power by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The prequel series, available on Showmax, has already been renewed for a third season. The six seasons of the original series, Power, as well as Season 1 Power Book IV: Force are also available on Showmax.

Zombieverse S1

Disguised as a dating reality show, a group of unsuspecting contestants find themselves in the middle of a zombie outbreak in Seoul. The reality show will be available to stream on Netflix.

Painkiller S1

Depp v Heard examines the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention as the first Trial by TikTok, and questions the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society. The documentary mini series will be available on Netflix.

Upshaws Part 4

The sitcom returns for a fourth part on Netflix. Upshaws follows the titular family, headed by Bennie and Regina, two working-class parents and high school sweethearts who try their best to make it through the ups and downs of life.
