Eyiyemi Olivia Rogbinyin Takes Lead in Don Ekama’s ‘Secondhand’

Eyiyemi Olivia Rogbinyin takes centre stage as a woman attempting to walk away from her marriage in Secondhand, a new film from writer-director Don Ekama that has wrapped principal photography in Lagos.

Produced by Myde Glover, the short film stars Rogbinyin alongside Keppy Ekpeyong (The Weekend), Timilehin Ojeola (When Tari Met Voke), Jessica Gabriel’s Ujah (Lady) and Hart Andrew (The Boy Who Gave). Told in English and Urhobo, Secondhand centres on a woman in her 60s whose decision to leave her marriage during a health crisis puts her at odds with her children.

The role gives Rogbinyin a story centred on an older woman’s autonomy, with the film exploring marriage, aging, family expectations and the tensions that emerge when personal choices collide with familial responsibility.

Rogbinyin’s works span over two decades across the industry. Most recently active in television, she has starred in 2026 Africa Magic drama series Secret Lives, crime series The Split, and the 2024 drama series Dust. She previously presented Weekend Nigeria on Spirit of Nigeria Radio between 2020 and 2022 and later co-anchored The Praise O’Clock Show on PraiseWorld Radio.

Secondhand is written and directed by Ekama, whose work has largely focused on identity, power and unconventional interpersonal dynamics. Earlier this year, Ekama was selected for Phase 2 of British Council’s Film Lab Africa.

Producer Myde Glover (L) and Director Don Ekama (R) of Secondhand.

The film marks the first project from Pear Pressure Productions, the company Ekama co-founded with Mannie Oiseomaye. Both serve as executive producers on Secondhand, with the company positioning itself around what it describes as bold and unconventional Nigerian storytelling.

Pear Pressure is already in pre-production on a second short film, with other projects also in development.

Glover produces Secondhand following work across film, television and digital media. A graduate of the MultiChoice Talent Factory West Africa Class of 2024, where he received Best Producer and Most Creative Storyteller honours, his producing and filmmaking credits include Everything Light Touches, ÌRÍN ÀJÒ (The Journey), and Isekonu. He most recently starred in Laju Iren-produced Onobiren.

He is also co-founder of Magic Media Studios and entertainment and culture platform ViSTAR Africa. His upcoming slate includes his first feature under Magic Media Studios, an Africa Magic Original.

Principal photography on Secondhand took place in Lagos, with Halimah Agbaje serving as cinematographer.

Release and festival plans for Secondhand have not yet been announced.
