Bamike Olawunmi (Bam Bam), Vine Olugu and gospel singer Samuel “Limoblaze” Onwubiko will lead the love triangle in The Perfect Spec, a new faith-based romantic comedy from Kinsman Studios.
We have our first extensive look at the film in a brand new trailer ahead of its release in cinemas on November 6.
Directed by Michelle Bello (Before Valentine’s), written and produced by Ololade Okedare and Ayobola Eniola, the drama follows Oye (Bamike Olawunmi), a 32-year-old Christian woman who decides to give up on dating after another heartbreak, only for a guardian angel to turn her world upside down with two possible romantic interests that complicate her decision.
Oye finds herself choosing between a childhood crush from church who ticks all her boxes and a client she finds irritating but charming. Her love life dilemma unfolds during her church’s #100KingdomMarriages campaign, which promises 100 marriages before the end of the year.
Through Oye’s experience, The Perfect Spec looks at dating within Christian communities, expectations around marriage and the uncertainty that can come with trying to reconcile personal desires with faith.
According to Okedare, Limoblaze’s casting was intentional, as the team wanted an actual gospel musician to portray a character with a music ministry.
Supporting cast includes Segilola Ogidan, Seun Ajayi, Nonso Odogwu, Vera Ephraim, Shamz Garuba, Ifeanyi Kalu, Tolu Odewumi, Gbemi Akinlade and Fiyinfoluwa C.P. Okedare.
Gbolahan Gafar also produces, while Ajoke Silva and Soji Jacobs serve as executive producers through Lufodo Productions. Tochukwu MACFOY (drfoy) and Ewoma Luther-Abegunde are also executive producers.
The story was partly inspired by the “kingdom marriage” prophecies associated with Pastor Nathaniel Bassey’s Hallelujah Challenge. Another part of the film takes from her mother’s experience as a widow who was reluctant to consider another relationship because of societal expectations. “The film explores the desire to hear God clearly and discern his leading in matters of the heart, using humour to make these deeply personal experiences relatable,” Okedare added.
Eniola adds that the film also considers the difference between what people want from relationships, what they believe they should want and what happens when those expectations do not go according to plan.
“We wanted to tell a story that feels familiar to anyone who has ever prayed about love, questioned their choices or wondered why finding the right person seems so complicated,” he said.
The Perfect Spec is part of an active slate for Kinsman Studios. The company’s debut feature, After Two, starring Seun Ajayi, has been picked up for a forthcoming pan-African cable television debut. Its other projects include Africa No Filter-backed Madam Flow, a coming-of-age film led by Pamilerin Ayodeji, and the AFRIFF-selected short A Tray of Locust Beans, starring Joke Silva.
Director Michelle Bello last directed Family Gbese for Inkblot in 2024.
Limoblaze has previously starred in Japa Ever After and Payday.
The Perfect Spec opens in Nigerian cinemas on November 6, with Cinemax handling distribution.
