‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Records Biggest Opening Weekend in West African Box Office History

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded the biggest opening weekend in West African box office history, setting a series of new theatrical benchmarks following its release across the region.

The film delivered Sony Pictures’ biggest opening in West Africa and became the fastest title to cross 700 million naira at the regional box office. It also registered the highest single-day opening ever recorded (201 million naira), the biggest opening for a superhero film and the largest opening in the history of the Spider-Man franchise in West Africa.

The record followed unprecedented advance-ticket sales and preview-screening numbers ahead of the film’s July 31 release. At Filmhouse Cinemas alone, the film had sold 3,500 advance tickets before opening, the highest presale figure recorded across the exhibitor’s Nigerian network.

FilmOne Entertainment, which distributed the film in West Africa, attributed the performance to strong partnerships with cinema exhibitors and enthusiastic audience turnout across the region.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day just rewrote the record books for FilmOne and for Nigerian cinema. Over N725 million grossed and 101,708 admissions in its opening run confirm what we’ve believed all along — that when you localise a global release the right way and back it with strong exhibitor partnerships, West African audiences turn out in numbers that rival any market in the world,” said Victoria Ogar, Head of Distribution at FilmOne Entertainment.

The result continues the significant box office growth of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films in West Africa. Spider-Man: Far from Home earned 181.3 million naira during its 13-week theatrical run in 2019, including a 42.6 million naira opening weekend. The film was distributed at the time by Silverbird.

Its sequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, made a substantially larger impact after opening in December 2021. Distributed by FilmOne, the film grossed 750.3 million naira and became the highest-grossing title of that year.

At the time, No Way Home also recorded the biggest advance-screening opening weekend of 2021, the year’s highest-grossing IMAX, MX4D and D-BOX opening, and the biggest opening day for a December release. Its opening weekend was then the second largest in West African box office history, behind Avengers: Endgame.

Brand New Day has now surpassed that opening-weekend benchmark and established a new high for both the franchise and superhero releases in the region.

The new film also represents a creative transition for the series. It is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He succeeds Jon Watts, who directed the preceding Tom Holland trilogy: Homecoming, Far from Home and No Way Home.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day demonstrated what is possible when audience insight, premium cinema technology and a deliberate conversion strategy work together. We built on the momentum from our previous campaigns by retargeting engaged moviegoers, educating audiences on the MX4D experience and using creator-led discount codes to track and convert interest into online purchases,” says Winifred Wessels, Head of Marketing, Filmhouse Cinemas. “Real-time sold-out communication further strengthened urgency, helping us achieve more than 3,500 advance ticket sales—the highest presale figure ever recorded across the Filmhouse network—and carry that early demand directly into opening-weekend attendance. For us, this result confirms that advance sales are not simply an indicator of excitement; when supported by the right data, messaging and booking journey, they become a powerful driver of measurable box office performance.”

Filmhouse’s campaign positioned its MX4D format—combining motion-enabled seats with environmental effects—as a central part of the theatrical experience. The exhibitor also used audience retargeting, creator-specific discount codes and real-time sold-out messaging to convert online interest into bookings.

The campaign took place against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding Nigerian theatrical market. Nigeria’s total box office grew from approximately 7.36 billion naira in 2023 to a record 15.64 billion naira in 2025. Filmhouse, which operates 12 locations across six Nigerian states, generated more than 4.07 billion naira in gross box office revenue in 2025 and was estimated to hold about 26 per cent of the country’s cinema ticket sales as of February 2026.

Superhero films have remained important contributors to that growth. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever delivered a 240 million naira opening weekend, the highest in Nigerian cinema history at the time, and later became the first film to cross 1 billion naira locally.

In 2025, Superman, The Fantastic Four and Captain America: Brave New World were among Nigeria’s leading superhero releases. Audience demand for the genre will be tested again in December with the expected theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday.

The performance of Brand New Day suggests that major superhero releases can still operate as large-scale theatrical events in West Africa, particularly when franchise recognition is combined with premium formats, advance booking campaigns and coordinated exhibitor promotion.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently showing in cinemas across West Africa, distributed by FilmOne.
