Kenneth Gyang’s Cinema Kpatakpata Secures Rights to Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s ‘Dreams and Assorted Nightmares’

Cinema Kpatakpata has secured the film and TV rights to Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s  “Dreams and Assorted Nightmares,” a collection of loosely interlinked short stories set in a fictional Nigerian town, where a local man dies each time a leaf falls from a certain tree, exploring the depth of human experience and the social structure of life in Nigeria.

“Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s ‘Dreams and Assorted Nightmares’ is a literary gem that resonates deeply with its exploration of human emotions and societal dynamics,” Cinema Kpatakpata co-founder Kenneth Gyang said. “We are thrilled to bring this compelling narrative to life on the screen and showcase its depth and brilliance through our cinematic vision. These stories remind me of haunting bedtime stories in my hometown of Jos Plateau where the author hails. I feel connected to the characters”. 

This strategic acquisition by Cinema Kpatakpata underscores the company’s commitment to adapting exceptional African literary works for film and television. The production company screened its latest, This is Lagos, an adaptation of Crispin Oduobuk-MfonAbasi’s short story, at the 12th edition of AFRIFF, which is expected to open in cinemas later this year.

The forthcoming adaptation of “Dreams and Assorted Nightmares” promises to captivate audiences with enthralling storytelling, portraying the intricacies of Nigerian life in a compelling visual narrative. 

“Dreams and Assorted Nightmares”, published in 2020 by Masobe Books, is Ibrahim’s third book and the second collection of short stories. His first novel, “Season of Crimson Blossoms”, won the Nigerian Prize for Literature, Africa’s largest literary prize in 2016.

Cinema Kpatakpata was co-founded by Kenneth Gyang and Tom Rowland-Rees (writer-producer), most known for their work on Confusion Na Wa. Gyang is also known for his directorial efforts in recent outings for EbonyLife like Oloture and Blood Sisters.
