Much to his father’s chagrin, Bassey has no plans to join the family company or settle down in the strategic marriage that has been planned for him. As punishment, he is sent to Bauchi state to participate in the mandatory NYSC program. Bassey arrives in the North kicking and screaming, but he quickly settles in and is determined to make the most of the situation. Outside the camp, Bassey is sent to teach at a secondary school in Kafin Madaki, a rural hamlet, where his liberal views collide with the society’s more regimented conservatism.
