EbonyLife Place London Nears Opening Ahead of October Launch
More than a year after Mo Abudu announced plans to launch EbonyLife Place London in the fourth quarter of 2025, the project is now entering its final stretch. A new teaser video released this week shows the transformation of the venue, including the nearly completed 180-seat auditorium, ahead of its revised October 2026 opening. Much like the Lagos flagship launched in 2019, EbonyLife Place London is being positioned as a one-stop cultural destination, combining a cinema dedicated to African and Black films with restaurants, lounges, retail, exhibition spaces and event venues under one roof.
AFRIFF 2024 Films Continue Their Journey to Wider Audiences
Nearly two years after premiering at the 2024 Africa International Film Festival, another group of titles from that edition is finding its way to wider audiences. Ifeoma Chukwuogo‘s Phoenix Fury, which won both Best Film and Best Director at the festival, is now set for a nationwide theatrical release on October 30 through Nile Entertainment, with a new trailer arriving ahead of its cinema rollout. Responding to a user on social media, Chukwuogo clarified that the release delay was due to a “timing thing” rather than distribution challenges. The announcement comes in the same week that The Man Died—winner of Best Screenplay at AFRIFF 2024 and later Best Director at the 2025 AMVCAs—began streaming on Prime Video (in select regions) following its festival run and limited theatrical engagement in Abeokuta. They join The Other Side of the Bridge and Headless, making at least four notable AFRIFF 2024 titles that have reached commercial audiences in 2026.
Black Market’s Guinness World Record Campaign Gains Momentum
Nora Awolowo‘s Rixel Studios has stepped up the campaign for Black Market as its planned Guinness World Record screening moves closer. This week, the producers unveiled an official trailer while announcing that more than 15,000 tickets have already been sold toward their ambition of attracting 50,000 people to a single screening at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on September 26. The production also confirmed a growing list of commercial partners—including PUMA, Shuttlers, Swoop, MTN, Oraimo and PlaystreetNG—joining the record attempt. Written by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and Fatimah Binta Gimsay, who also directed the film, Black Market is seeking to surpass the current benchmark of approximately 43,000 attendees for the largest film screening at a single venue.
Moses Inwang Deepens His Netflix Relationship with 8-Episode Series ‘Ordinary People’
Moses Inwang will return to Netflix on September 4 with Ordinary People, an eight-episode crime drama series, as the filmmaker unveiled its official trailer and confirmed the premiere date this week. Set within the seemingly perfect Mirage Estate, the series follows a community whose hidden secrets, ambitions and past mistakes collide, bringing together an ensemble cast that includes Ramsey Nouah, Chidi Mokeme, Adunni Ade, Sharon Ooja, Uche Montana, Jackie Appiah, Adjetey Anang, Michelle Dede, Lasisi Elenu and Shawn Faqua. The project marks another chapter in Inwang’s long-running relationship with the streamer. He previously directed Netflix Original Blood Vessel for Play Network Studios, while Merry Men 3 and Lockdown landed on the platform through post-theatrical licensing. First announced in 2024 and developed over three years, the Netflix global release countries of Ordinary People remains unknown.
‘I Live in V.I.’ Wins San Sebastián Residency Prize at Locarno Open Doors 2026
Nigerian project I Live in V.I. has received the Tabakalera–San Sebastián Film Festival Residency Award at Locarno Open Doors 2026. To be directed by Ugochukwu Azuya and produced by Olubunmi Ogunsola through ENSEMBLE, the social satire explores class, urban alienation and gentrification in contemporary Lagos through the lens of Victoria Island. The award includes a creative residency at Tabakalera—San Sebastián’s International Centre for Contemporary Culture—and participation in the industry activities of the San Sebastián Film Festival, offering the project additional development opportunities and access to international collaborators.
Ibadan Indie Opens Submission Window as AFRIFF Window Narrows
Nigeria’s 2026 festival calendar continued to gather pace this week as the Ibadan Indie Film Awards opened submissions for its fifth edition, while AFRIFF reminded filmmakers that entries for its 2026 edition close on August 31 before late submissions begin, under the theme “Frames of the Future: Africa’s Creative Intelligence.” Meanwhile, the Ibadan Indie Film Awards confirmed that its fifth edition will take place from November 27–29, unveiling the theme “Àtùpà: Lighting the Way Home” and opening submissions until September 17. The announcements remind the nearing of Nollywood’s annual late-year festival calendar. While AFRIFF continues to position itself as one of Africa’s leading international festivals, returning this year with its Film & Content Market (AFCM), Ibadan Indie has steadily established itself as a destination championing emerging and independent voices.
Funke Akindele Launches Her December Blockbuster While Unveiling a Surprise Prime Video Release
Funke Akindele kept audiences focused on both the big screen and streaming this week with a two-pronged rollout. She officially unveiled The Four, her 2026 December theatrical release, through an elaborate announcement video that has become a signature of her year-end campaigns. Set for release on December 11 through FilmOne Entertainment, the drama follows four women whose intertwined lives are tested by friendship, motherhood, resilience and a fight for a young man’s future. The ensemble cast includes Funke Akindele, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chioma Chukwuka, Bisola Aiyeola, Waje, Timini Egbuson and other familiar faces. Just days later on August 15, Akindele surprised audiences again with the release of Where Is Mr Right? on Prime Video. Produced under her FAAN banner and directed by Tunde Olaoye, the romantic drama stars Omowunmi Dada, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Bisola Aiyeola.
