Our Most Anticipated Nigerian Titles of 2026

In a 2025 filled with uncertainty, new distribution paths and global appearances, some debut producers and directors began to make their mark with projects like Red Circle, Freedom Way, Reel Love, and The Herd. Globally, Akinola Davies Jr’s My Father’s Shadow pulled Nigeria into international film conversations during the busy year.

At home, streamers like Kava and EbonyLife ON Plus provided new pathways through which some of these projects could reach audiences, beyond the stuffed cinemas and now-strategic international streamers.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises a diverse slate of projects featuring both established and emerging talents. Expected to return to the screens are Damilola Orimogunje, Esiri brothers, Clarence Peters and Laju Iren. Feature debuts include Chioma Paul-Dike’s Oblation and Chris Idihero’s Aloma, while Martha Ehinome makes her producing debut with Man of Her Dreams.

In genres, romance opens up the box office year with titles such as Naz Onuzo’s Everything Is New Again and Timini Egbuson’s successive collaboration with Kayode Kasum, Love and New Notes. The year is also set to offer thrillers like Spiraling, while Chioma Paul-Dike takes viewers on a psychological horror journey with Oblation. Meanwhile, family dramas such as Damilola Orimogunje’s Dear Ajayi and Melon House Production’s Adanne will aim to tug at the heartstrings.

Clarissa

Arie and Chuko Esiri, whose debut Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) won international praise for its storytelling and vivid Lagos realism, are now working on their sophomore project, Clarissa.

As Chuko explains, Clarissa is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway”, but relocated from 1920s England to 2020s Lagos. The story centers on longing and romance between two people, moving between the city of Lagos and flashbacks to the Esiris’ Abraka hometown in Delta State.

Speaking about the musical tone, Chuko shared they are drawing on the soulful sounds of Seckou Keita and his kora to express the film’s deep sense of love lost and missed chances. For the nostalgic flashbacks, they aim for a warm, full feeling, like Nina Simone’s version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, to capture the sweetness of childhood.

British actor David Oyelowo (along some other diasporan Nigerian acts) is an expected cast member of Clarissa, anticipated to feature on the festival circuit.
