The latest information on Shanty Town is that it will finally premiere on Netflix on January 20 as a limited series. This will possibly mark the first brand-new release heading to the streamer in 2023. Produced by Giant Creative Studios, principal photography ending in 2021, Shanty Town has now been acquired as a Netflix original series. Ahead of more promotional features like trailers and posters, here is everything we know about the star-studded project directed by Dimeji Ajibola.
The synopsis of Shanty Town reads, “A group of courtesans attempt to escape the grasp of a notorious kingpin, but political corruption and blood ties make freedom a near-impossible goal.”
Shanty Town follows the story of three Lagos State hustlers who unite to wage war against the biggest and most ruthless crime ring in the state.
The crime thriller also promises the spiritual and mystical, one that calls attention to the menace of society’s dark underbelly.
The crime thriller stars Chidi Mokeme as Scar, Ini Edo (Chief Daddy 2), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Christmas in Miami), Nse Ikpe-Etim (Glamour Girls), Uche Jombo (Blood Sisters), Zubby Michael as Colorado, Sola Sobowale (Battle on Buka Street), Nancy Isime (Superstar), Shaffy Bello (Elesin Oba), Ali Nuhu (Amina), Toyin Abraham (Ghost and the Tout Too), Mercy Eke, Lily Afe, Yaw Naija, Omowunmi Dada (Elesin Oba), Regina Daniels, Judith Audu and Slimcase.
Shanty Town was produced by Chinenye “Chichi” Nworah’s Giant Creative Studios, Champion One Entertainment and Minini Empire Production and directed by Dimeji Ajibola (Passport). The script was written by Xavier Ighorodje (Enakhe) and Donald Tombia (Introducing the Kujus) based on a story by Shirleyaan Ede, Xavier Ighorodje and Ayomikun Paseda.
Xavier Ighorodje and Chichi Nworah are also credited as the show’s creators.
Jonathan Kovel (Swallow) is credited as the director of photography. Ini Edo is also an executive producer on the project.
Speaking on the upcoming release, producer of Shanty Town Chichi Nworah says: “Shanty Town is a unique show in that it is at once different as it is familiar. The tale of redemption will especially resonate with audiences familiar with the grit and hustle mentality of Lagos, and indeed other fast-paced and vibrant cities around the world. We are spotlighting the underbelly of the city, and bringing to life the various character dynamics that exist beneath the cover of everyday “normal life,” thus telling a truly fresh and compelling story. I cannot wait for the entire world to see Shanty Town!”
Shanty Town will premiere on Netflix on January 20, 2023.
