    About us

    What Kept Me Up is an Ibadan-based movie and TV blog. We serve readers with news, reviews, trivia, and fun bits in the film world. It is managed by a managing editor with the help of two contributing writers and a social media manager. We focus on Nollywood as well as other foreign film industries. Most importantly, we engage people in conversations on what kept them up. The discussion with readers matters a lot. We want to get people talking non-stop.

    Your profile

    -Entry level in writing is accepted. Experience is an added advantage

    -Good communication and language skills in English

    -Expert use of Google products (Documents, Spreadsheet, Drive), WordPress and Slack

    -Holds interest in Nollywood web series and movies in a wickedly obsessed manner.

    -Interest in general pop culture.

    -Familiar with Nollywood media/press landscape. (Hollywood is a plus).

    -Familiar with film-related phrases and vocabulary.

    -Highly knowledgeable about the ongoings in the Nigerian film industry (Hollywood is a plus)

    -Constant internet availability.

    – Ability to deliver written content in a short time.

    -Team spirit, humour and creativity.

    -Preferably Ibadan-based, but open to all.

    Tasks

    -Content writing 2-3 times per week. Such as:

    Web series trailer analysis/break down

    Web series reviews and recaps

    Web series essays

    News reporting/writing (Hollywood+Nollywood)

    Occasional Nollywood film reviews

    Opinion articles on certain trending topics and debate in the Nollywood web series world

    Character/plot breakdown, forming connections between multiple shows

    Listicles

    Feature articles, essays, or interviews: 700-1500 words 

    Short articles, news or reviews: 250-600 words

    The tasks will be mostly self-assigned, based on agreement with the managing editor. Prompts will be occasionally assigned by the editor.

    Benefits

    • A weekly cinema ticket subsidy (1,000 naira)
    • Working from home and creating your monthly plan
    • A nice and respectful working environment with devoted cinephiles.
    • Free access to these streaming services: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Mubi, and Showmax.
    • Salary: 2.5 naira per word. Could be increased after six months, based on performance.

      • CV
      • Cover letter
      • Two essay samples (Word limit for each: 700 words):
        • review of a Nollywood web series.
        • one opinion piece on an existing topic or debate in the Nollywood web series world.
        • Optional: 1-2 other film essays that you have written in the past can also be added regardless of the word limit.
